After receiving a collection notice on January 22 I was shocked and worried that I have been a victim of identity theft.
I tried calling the phone number given in the collection notice, and was directed to their website. After getting nowhere on their website, I put a fraud alert on my credit report.
On January 23 I contacted the Credit Check company we use at my work to collect on unpaid debt to see if the company, Afni, Inc., was a licenced collection agency. I explained my case and the fact I still couldn't reach Afni. To see what was going on. Credit Check gave me the Afni. Corporate headquarters phone number (309) 828-5226. After getting through to corporate I was informed the phone number on the letter I received wasn't the right number and was given another to call.
I got through to Afni and spoke with a RUDE and OBNOXCIOUS woman named Nashaun. After battling with this poor excuse for a customer assistance rep, I was informed that the debt was from a unpaid phone bill from Oct 1995-Feb 1996.
I contacted my father and his lawyer. The statute of limitations on any and all debt in the state of Michigan is 6 years. This is a clear case of a credit collection company trying to make a buck. As instructed by my attorney, I am disreguarding Afni. And will take them to court if they continue to harass me in any way.
I hope this helps.
