I recently received a notice from AFNI inc. That they are a collection agency collecting a debt from a phone bill over 13 years old. I spoke to them and advised them that the bill was paid. They didn't care about anything I had to say but instructed me to file a dispute at their website. This dispute form asks for a lot of personal information so I declined. I did research and found that the statute of limitations in my state is 6 years for debt collection. This statute of limitations applies only if you do not acknowledge the debt. So I did the following:
I sent a letter to AFNI stating: "Provide verification of the Debt. Provide proof of the Statute of limitations. You are not authorized to contact me unless taking adverse action or resolving ther issue." I then contacted my local Attorney General's Office. 30 days later the matter was completely rectified.
