I'm writing to share my experience with this company and to tell anyone else out there that all of these stories about JBC must have some truth to them.

This company contacted me via my poor parents who repeatedly tried to inform them that it had been nearly a decade since any of their children had lived at this address and phone number, and yet the calls persisted. They identified themselves as being from JBC Legal Group, and having been involved in a lawsuit recently I thought it best to have my lawyer contact them to determine what the nature of their business was with me.
They informed my lawyer that it had nothing to do with my lawsuit and was an attempt to collect a debt from a utility bill. So I called and asked them to send me a copy of this outstanding electric bill for an apartment which I lived in almost five years ago! They said they would, but after waiting a week, I called again to request the information be sent.
The holidays came and went with not a word, and when I finally thought to call them a THIRD time to have them send the proof of debt, I was informed that the debt had been closed... By my lawyer. Knowing that my lawyer had made no payment to them I was confused, after all, all he had done was to call and ask what it was about.
HERE'S THE KICKER FOLKS - I do not deny the debt itself, and fully intended to pay it given the circumstances - BUT HOW DO I PAY SOMETHING THAT'S ALREADY BEEN PAID OFF?!!..
I don't. Because whether the debt was legitimate or not, it is ILLEGAL for any collection agency to attempt to collect payment on such things more than three years after the initial debt. They simply ran scared when a REAL lawyer contacted them about an action that was obviously ILLEGAL, and closed the debt.
They use scare tactics and intimidation to try and get you to pay them what is no longer a legal debt, and even had my poor mother in tears! What they are doing is completely ILLEGAL. And whatever you do - DO NOT believe them that payment will expunge your credit report because it won't. This is another lie that they tried to sell my mother telling her "if you give us a number to reach her we can make this all go away." Once that debt is there - only time and fiscal responsibility will make it go away - just ask the any FAQ page when you request a copy of your credit report.
