I have had an account with Compass bank for about 3 years. I have fought with them several times over overdraft fees (to the tune of about $600.00), but the most recent time takes the cake. I received a letter saying that I was overdrawn because I wrote a check for $32.95 and (my mistake) only had $32.93 in my account. I do realize that this was my mistake. I was charged $35.00 for them covering 2 cents! But I know this is how they work. Fine.
I called the bank and was told that I had a debit still pending, but If I deposited $44.20, everything would be taken care of. I went right then and deposited $45.00.
Three days later I got a letter stating that I was again overdrawn by 34 dollars and some odd cents! I was furious as I knew I had not used the account anymore! When I called the bank, they informed me that the debit that was previously pending incurred a $35.00 fee as well! Excuse me? I was told that the deposit I made would cover everything!
I told them that that was a rip-off and demanded that they refund the fee. I was told that they can not under any circumstances refund overdraft fees because they are all computer generated and irreversible! I was so mad that I closed my account that day. When I went in to close the account, I told them about all of this again. I told them how unhappy I was and they were kind-of like "So what?" There was only one sympathetic, very nice employee, but there was nothing she could do either.
All I have to say is: Free checking my arse!!!
