I have had my capital one card for just over two years but recently i noticed a $119.15 fee and was disturbed. It has been a few months since i had paid down my balance to $0 (as i have always done on this card) so i had not looked at the statement to even notice it; mistakenly assuming it has not been used so it's still at $0. I called the 800 number to try to figure out whether somone had used my card w/o authorization. The customer service rep told me the $60.00 fee was an annual membership fee which was placed on my account in september each year. Additionally, it is now november 28th and two late fees ($30.00 each) had created a $119.15 balance. I told him that i was not responsible for a "membership fee" & he stated that i signed up for it because it had been on something i signed.
I have credit cards which have no annual fee's and it was the only trick i had heard of to add fees to your card so i know they must have pulled a fast one or something. I asked to speak to his supervisor and got stan (employee# akn5). He stated the same company line about the fee as if scripted; then i asked him about the late fees and he said there was nothing he could do about it. I asked him who else i could speak with and he said no one else today but you could call back tommorrow thanksgiving day! I was fed up by the non-chalant attitude by then and informed him that i was the customer and told hid that he was there for me: first i asked him to place me on their do not call registry and to cancel my card. He completed my first request then told me he could'nt close the account until i first had a $0 balance (which i did before the membership fee) followed by 30 days of a $0 balance. I felt like i was being held hostage... Hopefully this letter will help because i don't think they're (capital one) planning on it.
