I had to cancel a ~$190 flight for Nov 4 (booked Oct 24), and was told that I could use the amount within one year (while paying change fees, etc). I tried to book on Oct 22nd (only able to book via phone), was told I had until Nov 4th to use the credit, then they hung up on me. I tried again on Oct 26th, was again transferred around to 3 different departments and when able to speak with someone, they said I could not use the credit, since it's the time of booking, not flight. HORRIBLE customer service in addition to ridiculous policies. Use Kayak - Orbitz is useless.
