Angies List bills itself as reliable merely because a company cannot pay to be part of the list, however what you ARE NOT told is that they do NO RESEARCH AT ALL ON THE COMPANIES that ARE on their list. Why, you ask? Easy, because ALL this list is, is a collection of REVIEWS SENT IN BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE LIST. So a consumer will not know if a doctor has his medical license suspended, or a contractor works without a license (which is illegal in some states I.E. Florida) or how many Better Business Bureau complaints if any a company has against it.
Any company can sign up to become a member of the list with no screening process whatsoever and while Angie's List offers to intercede if your job goes wrong, there is nothing they can do legally if the contractor doesn't feel like honoring a guarantee because their punishment is merely a bad review and a ban from Angies List.in fact there are many companies on the list with absolutely no member reviews at all.
SAVE YOUR MONEY, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH BEFORE YOU HIRE A CONTRACTOR. The Better Business Bureau helps you find questionable companies, every state has a department of professional regulation to investigate contractors as well as a Medical Board to help you check out doctors licensure regardless of specialties.
Angie's is very quick to point out that they make no claims about company reliability or licensure status etc. So why are you going to flip 30.00 plus dollars a year when I can get the me review from coworkers, neighbors for free or do my own research? I'd rather donate that thirty dollars to the homeless.
