My husband contacted Eve, an employee of 51 State Moving. They reached a verbal agreement that 51 State Moving would move our belongings for an amount not to exceed $450. He then hired 51 State Moving for our move.
On the day of the move, the movers arrived at our former residence. I reminded the foreman of the aforementioned verbal agreement. He acknowledged the agreement. The movers proceeded to load our belongings into their truck.
Once the loaded moving truck arrived at our new residence, the foreman calculated a total of approximately $600 ($450 for labor and $150 for materials and tape). Before even finishing the job, they calculated the charge based on 6 hours worked. I reminded him of the verbal agreement, and he said the $450 cap was for labor only, and that the $150 was for materials and tape. My husband and I called a supervisor and complained. The supervisor told us that all he could do was instruct the foreman to give me a discount on the tape. The foreman gave me a discount of approximately $20 off the charge of $600.
The foreman then stated that CASH was the ONLY form of payment they would accept. The movers refused to unload my belongings until I paid in cash. No mention of this CASH ONLY policy was made at any time before this. I drove to the bank to get cash. One of the 3 movers began to unload our belongings while I was gone. The other 2 movers waited until I returned with the cash before they would move any of our belongings.
After paying the cash, the foreman demanded that I sign a ledger sheet detailing the charges. I signed the sheet under protest. I asked for a copy of the sheet along with a cash receipt. The foreman REFUSED TO GIVE ME A RECEIPT for my cash payment, and he refused to give me a copy of the ledger sheet. He stated it was their policy to mail the receipts after the move. My husband called the supervisor, and the supervisor confirmed this policy of refusing to give receipts for cash payment.
It has been months since our move and we still have not received a copy of the receipt we requested.
