Took my deposit and didnt give me service! Immoral company!

We moved to San Antonio and rented a house from my ex-sister in law because she was being relocated and it wasnt feasible at the time for her to sell. Well, we had Time Warner for the past year since we moved here and wasnt happy with it so we decided to switch to Directv.
We looked online and found a package that we liked and went ahead and placed and order. After Directv pulled my credit they approved me for service but I had to pay a $300 deposit. Against better judgement, I paid it.
I was pleasantly surprised when they scheduled the installation for the very next day. The tech came and installed the service and we were happy.
THIRTY MINUTES after the installation was completed, the tv went blank and said it was unable to identify the receiver and instructed us to try to reset or contact customer service. We reset it a few times and to no avail. So we called customer service... Thats when our nightmare began!
Upon getting a CSR on the phone she informed us that my ex-sister in law had service with Directv when she lived in the house and left a bill, that AFTER the account was set up they found that we were related (by a former marriage) and in order for US to have service, her bill would have to be paid. We explained to them that someone elses bills should not be our responsibility as it was not our fault, or doing, that she left a balance with them. We were so upset over their position we said ok, then give us our deposit back as we werent going to pay someone elses bills so that WE could have service. It just wasnt anything in the relm of logic! They refused but said that we could contact our bank (the debit card we used) and reverse it... The bank said that they would have to receive something from Directv stating that they were going to release it. Naturally Directv isnt going to do this.
We opted to just have them apply it to my ex-sister in laws balance and we would collect it from her ourselves (her debt to US)... They wouldnt do that either.
Nothing in the online sign up did it say that the deposit was unrefundable but said that we could get it back @ $5 a month if we kept our account in good standing for 12 months... How can we do that when WE are being held liable for another persons account because that person was once married to my brother??? The customer agreement doesnt address security deposits either.
Whats really another kicker is that, they took our money THEN decided they werent going to give us service BEFORE the installation was done and they LET the installation happen WITHOUT even letting us know the situation! BECAUSE, if they had let us know before hand then maybe they would have HAD to give the money back but they let the service be installed... And they used that to try and screw us!
Its just unfathomable to me how they can do this to people... And apparently not have the least bit of logic behind it?!

So now, we are out $300 and dont have service!
1. WE didnt cancel our service, Directv did! 30 minutes after it was installed!
2. We arent the ones that didnt pay our bill
3. Directv is keeping our money and not applying it to anything, not even my ex-sister in laws account, we dont owe anything for it to be withheld for and they wont give it back to us!

I hope this hasnt happened to anyone else... But at the same time I do because I need to know what I can do to fix this situation. I know that my ex-sister in law doesnt have the money to pay it but I am now out $300 as well and did nothing wrong.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
