I moved out of an apartment in Evanston, IL on the 15th of August and cancelled my electricity account as of the move out date. Apparently they still charged me for the current resident of that apartment throught the 15th of february. I contacted customer support and they said that they needed proof i wasnt living there so they could charge the right customer, i. E the current tennant. I had the lease office of the building send over a letter to ComEd saying that i had moved out as of the 15th of August of the previous year. The customer support said it would take approximately two weeks for them to process this and that i would hear back from them. However in the meanwhile they sent it out to a collection agency forcing me to pay otherwise facing a negative report on my credit. I regretfully paid, only to never hear from ComEd again, nor see a refund for the payment made on electricity i never used, in the apartment i was no longer renting. They are thieves.
