Relocation Van Lines
And Moving.com horribly unqualified interstate move

We have a horrible moving experience with relocation van lines (in chicago) in early 2007. Our move is from chicago to bay area, california
Here are the things went wild:

1) overcharge
On the day for the pick up at chicago (around Jan 22rd), employees from relocation van line tried hard to over charge us for the "packing" by couple of hundreds dollars. Even though the packing charge was stated to be included in the estimation. We refused the over charges, but they insisted that we pay them $80 or so in extra, otherwise they can't pack for us. So we paid for the overcharge.

2) use subcontractors without noticing customer
The employees of the company kept telling us that they are a "direct" mover, they will use their own truck and deliver it to us with their own employee. This turns out to be a total lie. And a nightmare.

Basically they subcontracted it out to different movers along the route. And used a mover in San Jose to deliver our belongings.

3) Illegally label items from 2 household with same "job number"

When they packed our stuff, they put a label on each item. The label has a "job number" on it. It's the way to tell which item is belong to which household. Because their staff is not sufficiently trained (most of them hardly speaks English), they use the SAME job number on our stuff with a family move to seatle.

So when it comes to the delivery in ealry Feb they unloaded all the stuffs from that seatle family to our house!!!

4) Rude employees, careless handling of items
When they finally get our items back from seatle (middle of Feb), they just show up at our door on a heavy rainy day. We told the movers (from the subcontractor) that the weather condition doesn't permit them to unload items, they agreed but stating that their boss force them to do it. And if we refuse to accept the items, they will simply pile them up on the street!!!
So we have to let them "dump" our belongings soaking wet into the house. After the dumping, the movers simply left, they didn't assemble any furnitures for us as stated in the contract.

5) refuse to compensate on damges and losses
We found that many items such as the mattress of bed is missing, and many furniture parts (such as legs of tables) damaged/lost. For mattress, they said that they made a mistake again and it's on the way from california to New York!!! We ask them either to compensate our loss of the mattress as they have failed the 10 business delivery promise or pay us to live in hotel before matress and other items delivered. They refused our request. And one day in early March they simply show up and dump the mattress in our house. We ask them to compensate us for the damages again, they said that they they can compensate us at 60 cents per lb for the missing legs of the tables, and that's all they can do.

6) conspiring with moving.com to bait customers
We have filed online feedback at moving.com, which referred relocation van lines to us at the first places. Moving.com didn't respond to our compalin at all and keep referring relocation van lines to other customers.

So in short, unqualified movers such as relocation van lines should be avoided by consumers, and be banned by authorities.

Online referring company such as moving.com shall be responsible for what they are referring.
