As a cashier for six years, and having served 8 store managers in that time, I was unfairly fired for a bogus reason. When I realized a customer was trying to usa a credit card that was not his (it was "supposedly" his bosses) I informed the customer that he had to go to the service desk to make a phone sale through the computer system.
He was informed of this procedure the day before also when he tried the same thing. I was called into the office and fired for "inappropriate behavior" 10 minutes before quitting time on my last day of work for that week. I was told I was rude to the customer. The customer was in fact rude to me. All the training manuals at Home Depot specifically instruct cashiers to reject a card if it does not belong to the customer, especially American Express cards.
How ironic that my 6 year anniversary was only 2 weeks away and I would have been eligible for 3 more weeks of vacation and a pay raise. How ironic that Home Depot just started hiring temporary workers on 90 day trial periods. How ironic that they are relying on more and more part time help. All my awards and good job performance reports mean nothing.
This was profit motivated, and nothing else. Longevity is an expense to a store manager who is paid on store profits. And some of them will go to any extreme to increase the stores bottom line to ensure their bonus, even if it means putting hard working and dedicated employees in financial distress to meet their store goals. My 14.00/hour job is probably now a 7.00/hour job.
