I called Vonage yesterday (11/14/07) to ask if they were Land Line based phone company. The woman assured me over and over during the conversation that they were. After having placed the order she told me the fee for set up was $44.94. I told her that I would call back because I did not want my checking account touched until after the 15th. She assured me that my account would not be charged until the day service was set up (5-7 days). After, all of this (a good 25 minutes on the phone) she started reading off the normal things you get when you sign up for phones etc over the phone. She was reading so fast I could barely keep up with what she was saying. I kept catching small things that were not what we had discussed starting with the check going thru in 1-2 days. I stopped her and we went over that at what point she assured me again over and over that no it did not happen until hookup in 5-7 days. The next biggie I caught was they did not provide the internet needed for the phone. I stopped her there and asked her why she had told me it was a land line when it wasn't... She the ARGUED with me for about 5-8 minutes about why it was better than a land line. I told her to stop the order immediately at which point she argued some more until I finally had no choice but to raise my voice to get her to stop talking and stop the transaction. At this point I asked for a confirmation number on the cancellation. She told me she had not put the order thru yet so it was not processed and would not be. When I checked my e-mail this morning there was a nice thank you note from them for choosing vonage and giving me my account number. When I called them (and let me tell you trying to contact them on their site they send you in that e-mail was near impossible) the lady told me my check was already processed but she would cancel immediately. She assured me that she could see who Ispoke to and would deal with them and that this was not their way of doing business. I told her I needed that money back in my account immediately as I had explained to the lady that lied to me over and over I could not have that money come out until tomorrow. She assured me it would happen right away. I still have not seen anything done including the cancellation e-mail she assured me I'd get right away. I'm just amazed after seeing all the same complaints up here that no one has shut these people down.
