My family and I were in the Caribbean, on the island of St. Martin, for the first two weeks in September. We had saved up for over 2 years to make the trip. I called AT&T the week before we left to find out how I could use my cell phone to call home to check on my wifes 98 year old aunt in a nursing home. I was told I could be in their international calling plan and all I would have to do was dial 001 and the number. I asked them if there were any other charges involved and was told no.
Well when we got home and I checked on our minutes etc., I discovered that our bill was for over $2300 and I thought it must be a typo. I found out that my son was receiving calls from his friends and we were being charged international roaming rates for those incoming calls. This phone bill was more than we paid for the trip and I was outraged. I was told that these were valid charges and that I would have to pay them. I punch a clock every day and I cannot afford to pay this. It is not a question of validity because those calls were made to my son, it is a question of I was told that I would be charged for placing calls and was told that there were not any other charges. No one told me about international roaming rates and no one called me to inform me these charges were being incurred.
