American Home Shield, AHS Deceptive contracts & lousy service contractors

This was the first and last year I signed a contract with AHS. Recently my tenant's A/C stopped working at the start of a heatwave. Called AHS and was put in touch with a service company. The earliest they could come out was the following Tue (called on Fri).

My tenant went into the attic and noticed that the fuse on the HVAC's circuit board was blown. I contacted the service company I was set to have an appt with to see if they knew where to get a 2amp fuse so we can avoid the service call if possible. We could not locate any so I confirmed our appt for Tue.

The service company came out and said that the circuit board was fried and needed replacing but of course AHS informs me that that is not covered under the warranty with them. I contacted the service company to see how much this was going to cost and if it would be covered under the manufacturer's warranty which I realized the system was still under.

It would be covered, but because this service company had prior issues on getting paid from the manufacturer they wanted me to pay $700 upfront for parts and labor (apparently not just the circuit board can be replaced but the whole unit it was part of had to be replaced) and have the manufacturer reimburse me.

I was not too keen on this idea and called another HVAC company on my own for a 2nd opinion and to ask if I would need to pay upfront. I was told absolutely not. She said that the other company was probably not an authorized Carrier dealer. She has never run into a payment problems with Carrier. They inspected that same day and service tech said that fuse was blown and then promptly replaced. And guess what, the a/c began to work.

So I almost paid $700 upfront to replace something that didn't need replacing, the tech never even looked at the fuse or made the effort to try replacing it first. And now AHS says I owe a $55 service fee whether or not service was performed. It is just for them to show their pretty faces and not give any actual professional & knowedgeable work. The service people AHS uses are apparently not the most knowledgeable and are not even Carrier authorized service dealers. Maybe AHS should rename the fee "showup" fee instead of "service" fee. That would be more accurate.

I don't think I should have to pay this fee. I have submitted my complaint today to Consumer Affairs.
