Help with charges?

My husband and I are divorcing after 25 years of marriage. We had Verizon service for our two cell phones for about 8 years. I am 76 years old and because of the divorce, I recently had to move from our family home to another city 200 miles away. The move has been expensive and I am very worried about finances. When I received a bill a few weeks ago from Verizon for over $185 I was shocked. I guess I went over the "voice usage" (I didn't know there was such a thing) trying to get services installed in my new home and was probably "on hold" for many hours during those first weeks in my new city. At any rate, when I saw that bill I panicked, called Verizon customer support and said I wanted to cancel my Verizon phone service. I had only had my own account and my new phone number for a few weeks. The man I spoke with at Verizon said "Okay, your service will be discontinued on September 21." Period. I paid that bill. A few weeks later I received another Verizon bill dated 9/21 for $306.03 for "surcharges and other charges." I was in shock. Now I realize I should have read the contract but the recent move, my very bad emotional state, my divorce... Well I neglected my responsibility. So I assume the $306.03 was to pay off the contract. Frankly, I did not even know I had a contract because my husband's account and my account were just split into two separate accounts. Or so I thought. It is just very hard coping with all the things my husband had handled for years. So now I'm looking at charges of $491 (total) for just a few weeks' worth of Verizon service. Wouldn't it have been a courtesy for the Verizon rep to inform me of the contract charges I would incur if I cancelled? He said nothing at all. I assume my call was recorded? I wrote a letter to Verizon and asked the company to forgive at least the $306.03 charge. Today I got a phone message from Jasmine at Verizon, Correspondence Team in which she said she would "definitely be very happy" to explain why they cannot refund these charges and told me to call her back at 1-800-735-6724, ext 4024, and ended saying "Have a great day!" Huh?

So now what? Probably no way to fight Verizon...
