Attempted to ruin my credit by charging bogus contract cancellation fees and sending to collections

After more than two years of NO WIRELESS SERVICE in our home, we switched to AT&T in August. I paid my last Verizon Wireless bill and cancelled the account, explaining that we had no service and it had been a long two years without it.

Today, Nov. 24, I received a letter from Verizon Wireless stating they were in the process of preparing my account for write off and referral to an outside agency for collection of $585.49! This was the first non-advertising communication I had received since cancelling the account. The letter went on to state '... Be advised that Verizon Wireless is entitled to report write-offs to all major consumer credit bureaus.'

I called Verizon Wireless, and held on patiently while they checked my account. They told me those were contract cancellation charges. When they looked further, it was determined that our contracts (for 4 phones) were long expired, and they apologized for the error.

I don't know if this is standard Verizon Wireless practice, or if I was just a lucky customer, but here's my read on it...

I cancelled my account. Verizon Wireless didn't like that. They attempted to damage my credit. They did not send a bill for the cancellation fees, they just sent a collection warning three months later. Had I somehow overlooked or ignored it, Verizon would have enjoyed a fait accompli.

I'm furious. Thanks for listening!
