Long Island College Hospital
Poor Patient Care

First incident occurred on July 19. Patient, Elsa Santiago, was in an isolated room on the 10 th floor after having a major surgery procedure. On that day patient needed to urinate and she rang the nurses bell, they responded that they would send someone in to help her. A half hour later no one came so I (Lucy Paulino, patient's Goddaughter) told patient to do it right on the bed. At which time I (Lucy) went to the nurses station and was not even acknowledge until 4 minutes later when I said excuse me. (Keep in mind all four people at the desk were just socializing with each other, not even discussing anything patient related. I was told by one of them her nurse (who was not at the desk area) is in charge. Followed by her nurse approaching me and telling me she was going to send someone in but she got tide up. I got very upset and told her this is unacceptable, a patient with an open wound who can't move on her own should never be left to wait so long. This is how major accidents happen. Plus there were 3 PCA s at the desk doing nothing. I proceeded to complain to Dr. Parker, Dr. Wong and Ms. Carter (Nurse Supervisor). Next Day patient was transfered to a room closer to nurse's station and everything seemed to be working ok for the next two days. The third day, I get a call from the patient's friend who said after the doctors changed the dressing on the wound some of the leakage from the wound fell on the floor. Keep in mind the dressing was changed Two hours before her friend got there. No one had called maintenance to have it cleaned up. Also unacceptable. This is toxic waste and the patient or anyone entering the room can easily be infected by it. Ok so now I call the hospital and her daughter Vanessa who was going to see her that day, I complained and also told Vanessa to make sure that was taken care of while she was there. Vanessa got there and now 4 hours later it had not been cleaned. When finally Vanessa got someone to come and clean it they wiped it up with a towel and left the towel under the bed. Unsanitary conditions for the patient. Followed by Vanessa telling the person why was the towel being pushed under the bed if that was dirty, it should be remove. You would think these people would have a bit more common sense. Guess not. The third incident a week later patient was left without pampers, because the hospital had run out of pamper.in the entire hospital there was no pampers. How could this be? Hospitals should have all their supplies and never run out of anything. We had to go out and buy pampers for my godmother to have some. Fourth incident on August 26, I (Lucy) arrived at the hospital at 2pm to find out that my Godmother's friend had to bathe her when she got there at 1pm, because my godmother had range for the nurse to have someone bath her and no one did. The head nurse Ms. Taylor had sent John one of her other nurses on the floor to give her the water to bathe, but the patient is not suppose to bathe herself, she is not to move around with the open wound and a tube in her wound that helps prevent leakage from her intestines. Every moment can cause leakage to go to the wound and infect it. So When I arrived I complained to Ms. Taylor and I told her this is unacceptable and that I will file a complaint with the Dept. Of Health which I did. Ms. Taylor appologized and said she would tell Mr. Perry and wanted me to speak with Mr. Perry, but I choose to complaint to the Dept of Health instead. Yesterday, August 27, again they left the patient (Elsa Santiago) alone to bathe herself. When I spoke to the patient last night I filed a complaint with Ms. Carter as well as with the head nurse. They said they would fix the problem and I am sure they will be attentive for a day or two and in the next week or so we are back to the same problems. I am tired of complaining and nothing being done. This hospital obviously has poor patient care from the nurses and staff on the floor only. Something has to be done not only because of my godmother's health, but also for all the other patients who do not dare complain and be heard.

If a tragedy happens because of their neglience to do their job, all we get is I'm sorry and no explanation. Plus Human carelessness is not going to compensate for accidents happening or lossing a family member.
