General Road Construction Co Ray Wood 651-485-1996
Consumer Report

A construction worker in orange vest came to my door and said they were just finishing a job and had some asphalt left and would I like them to level off my driveway. I said yes and thought they just wanted to fill some holes with the left over material. He said he would be back with some paper work. They arrived and a crew started on the driveway backing a big truck to the bottom of my driveway and started working. They were very fast. Then a young kid came with the paper work and said they woud do this for a good rate. I asked how much this would cost and he said it depended on the square yard. Meanwhile the crew was laying the asphalt. He had written on the paper $92 and $42 saying I would get the lower price. Again I asked for a ballpark figure on cost and he did not give me one. He said he had to measure. Meanwhile, the asphalt had been laid up to the city road. He then took the measuring wheel and measured the driveway. He told me it was 195 square yards at $42 per square yard. When I saw the figure, I told him I did not have that kind of money and would have to get it. I told him I had no idea it would cost this much because he did not give me an estimate, I couldn't pay him now. He asked how much I could pay and I said $1000. He said we have to pay for the material today so he needs the entire amount due. He then called someone on the phone, I don't know who, and asked me when could I pay the amount. I told him the soonest would be one Friday August 24th when I took money out of my retirement plan. He then asked me to write a check fo the full amount and that he would hold it until Friday August 24th. I made out the check to Ray Wood, who lives in Florida. He then left. I noticed he had crossed out the amounts he had written on the invoice, which was $94 and $42 and just wrote down the full amount due. He did not write down how many square yards he had measured and how much it was per square yard. I had to chase them down to have them write it on the invoice. They also broke several tree branches off of my apple tree. The entire job was completed within 30 to 45 minutes. I then called my son and daughter, who work both work with ashpalt companies in their line of work to see if I was over charged. My daughter said that she was currently working with a company to overlay an entire parking lot of 790 square feet and the price for that was $21,000, which also included complete tear out of the old asphalt, grading and laying 3 inches of asphalt. After speaking with my daughter and at her request, I called the bank and stopped payment on the check.
