Misleading advice and refusal to honor contract - MagicJack Support and Service

I signed up with MJ in 2008. The device never worked properly and, even though I was assured there would be no problems, it was blamed on the fact that I was using it on a Mac. I was also promised the ability to get a Canadian number and that took nearly 2 years to happen. With still no decent functionality I loaned it to my son who eventually misplaced it. When I looked into a replacement, I was told they could replace but if I wanted the new MJ, I would have to pay full price.

I got the MJ, which came with a one year of service, and opted to purchase the additional 5 year. MJ support refused to transfer the remainder of my old contract, nearly 2 years, stipulating that they could have had I purchased the same model... Like that makes ANY difference. Now they insist, even though I DO NOT have the old device that they could ship me another but it would end up costing me about $60.00. Adding insult to injury, they refuse to set my 911 location because it is locked with the original device. How's that for stupidity. When I purchased the old device there was no 911 service therefore it was never set up. So how can they insist it's locked into a device I no longer device?

To those who would purchase a MagicJack I tell you this... DON'T.

Seeing as most people have cell phones, get one with a "unlimited incoming calls" plan and then get a gmail account. Google mail has a FREE feature that allows you to make unlimited audio and/or video call anywhere in the continental North America. As far as 911, turn on your cell's GPS and, if all else fails, you can be tracked in the event of an emergency, so I was led to believe though I've not had the unfortunate instance to test that.

If your cell plan comes with a high data transfer limit or unlimited one, you can use Google Talk with it. It all depends on your needs and requirements.in our case, we needed a second phone to receive call and MJ gave us that. With glitches, but it's cheaper than signing up with local providers or other online telephony apps, i.E. Skype and others, where there is either a connection fee, which can add up quickly, after the monthly fees for either the service and/or the luxury of your own phone number.

MagicJack's tech support is outsourced to the Philippines, if memory serves, and no matter how you try, you will NEVER get real help when you need it. At the absolute "best" you'll be brushed off with a «we'll pass it on to the engineers» or they'll terminate the online chat and you'll get a «we're sorry but your session timed out» which is a preset message they send when they don't want to deal with you anymore.

In the mean time, I purchase 6 years, of which they'll honor only 5, with nearly 2 years remaining that they will only allow me to use IF I purchase yet another older model device. Even after I told them the device was either lost or stolen, while at home my son's room at camp was cleaned out, I cannot set the 911 feature location. The device constantly need to be rebooted and is somewhat choppy at best. Man, am I a sucker or what.

If you don't NEED to. I would DO NOT buying a MagicJack. Poor quality device and utterly useless outsource tech support.

I did notice that on a previous step of this "Measured Up" website, I had to option to list my location. It did not offer ANY Canadian references and listed my home in Wisconsin, or where ever it was. I live in Alberta and the device, even with alleged help from MJ online support, my phone is off by 2 hrs. I shows EST when I'm on Mountain Time.
