My sister was returning home for a visit and I wanted her to be able to see all the family without waiting for someone to drive her around. I called Avis and asked if I could pick up a car on the day that she arrived at the airport and was told that it wasn't a problem - we live in a smaller town so it seemed reasonable. I also asked how to handle the rental since I would be paying for her vehicle and I was told that I had to rent the car and she would be a second driver. An hour before her plane landed, I was at the airport and they had no cars. She and I made arrangements to come back the following day and get a car, which we did with another sibling. Avis had cars that day but the clerk couldn't figure out how to process the Avis gift certificates I had and the check out took forever. Again I explained that my sister would be driveing the car, I wouldn't be using it. The price I received at that time was just under $200. When my sister returned the car, my credit card was charged for an additional $136, for a total of $336. The reason? $65 for the 'second' driver and $71 for damage waiver. What is a damage waiver? I could have saved money simply by handling my sister the gift certificates and having her sign up for the car, she had to sign papers and give her driver license anyway. I feel that the clerk directed the situation in order to maximize the amount of money the company received. This is the first time I've ever used Avis and I'll be sticking with Enterprise from now on - Enterprize has great customer service.
