My spouse and I travelled to South Africa in March. I have 2 cell phones, separate lines on my account. Before I left the USA, I contacted AT&T to add international cell service to my plan that would allow me to use both my phones in South Africa if I needed to. It was reasonable. I also added international "data" service to my plan that would allow me to text home if I needed to. While I was there, I was robbed and one of the telephones was stolen. I reported the theft to AT&T as soon as I was aware of the theft. I later received a bill for about $3,200 for calls and text messages made on my account beyond my plan amount. I contacted AT&T regarding the bill and they credited me $850, but demanded that I pay the rest of the bill because some of the text messages were made to my phone that was in my possession. I did not get anyone at AT&T management to discuss with me and explain all the charges. I was left with no alternative but to close the account and shut off my phone. They wanted the full amount of the bill of course and turned me in for collection. I still owe them about $1,500 and they have a collection company on me. I am fed up with them and have written letters to collection company and AT&T with no resolution. I have paid them more than they deserve. I am stuck with a fancy blackberry phone that only works with AT&T and paying a cancellation fee for the other telephone because I broke the 2 year contract on it. I have been an AT&T customer for at least 5 years and they could care less.
