On July 23 I purchased 2 items. A verbatim CDRW which had a manufacturers rebate of $30 and a Kbyte 256mb ram which had a rebate of $20. Both were advertised in the Best Buy sales circular. All forms were properly filled out and mailed the following day.
I told my girlfriend about the Kbyte rebate and she purchased one the same day, followed the same proceedure.
On 12-04 I was wondering where my rebate was and emailed Verbatim. I received an email from Verbatim that the CDRW was made by Cyndine under their license and that they had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.in otherwords, lots of luck.
On the same day I called Kbyte and asked about my rebate. She informed me I needed to call 1-877-529-8363 and ask for ext 4013. Upon being connected I listened to a recording advising me they too had gone bankrupt, nothing else I could do and that they really did think they could pay the rebates at the time of the promotion.
I called Best Buy and was informed by a manager there was nothing they could do because it was a manufacturers rebate. They had no control over manufacturers rebates. I advised them I felt they should be responsible because they were drawing customers in and making profit based on those rebates. Still told basically lots of luck.
DO NOT buy anything with a manufacturers rebate. I've had good luck with company rebates but this does it for me. I threatened to call the local news channel and did they want that kind of publicity since they were pushing more rebates during the Christmas shopping season. The reply I was told?"Okay". I will now see what I can do with the SC attorney generals office and the FTC regarding this
