I purchased a home warranty policy, the Orange Plus which was supposed to cover everything. My home was a total renovation. First, everytime a repairman is sent to your home, you are charged $65 service fee. They told me they did not cover bathtubs. That I would have to take care of the problem myself. Second, my air-condition unit went out in June, 100 degree temperatures (New Orleans, Louisiana).
I was told that it was not covered as well because it was due to salt water. Even after the repairman that I myself contact to have come out said it was the blower motor not due to salt water from hurricane Katrina, they still would not pay to have it fixed. I had to come out of pocket $365 to have it fixed myself. I was told to send in the work sheet from my repairman and I would be reimbursed. I called several times and was finally told that it was not covered.
Well, enough was enough. This policy was $500. I called and cancelled the policy and asked to have the remaining $367 refunded to me. I was told it takes 6-8 weeks for this. I figured if I am paying to have everything fixed, what the hell do I need a home warranty for? They put you through so much unnecessary crap it is ridiculous.
I have several girlfriends who are in the process of purchasing home and I told them, PLEASE DO NOT get a home warranty policy through Home Warranty of America. It is only set up for the realtor to get a commission for selling their policies and the insurance company to make money off of the consumer because they DAMN SURE DON'T GET ANYTHING FIXED.
