Payroll & HR Department Verizon Threatening ex-employee's credit report if they don't pay back paycheck given to them because of negligence of HR and Payroll's part

I left Verizon Wireless the end of April for health reasons. They deposited a paycheck into my acct that I did not earn as I was no longer working there, and I contacted my local HR to let them know of the overpayment, as I was going to pay it back. The local HR person said i'd receive a letter from payroll, and then I could send it back by check. You would think they'd send this out promptly, but they didn't. I kept the money aside for a month, and never heard from them.By then, I needed it to pay some bills as I am not currently employed. I should not have to HOUND them, as I was the one informing them of the issue, and they should be grateful that I was honest to begin with.

Well, 2 months later, I receive a letter today, stating I have to contact them within 15 days to make payment arrangements. "Failure to contact us within 15 days from the above date will result in this being sent to our collection agency and may result in a negative impact on your credit rating or further legal action." Firstly, has this happened to anyone else? If so, did they send it to collections, or did they take you to court? If they sent it to collections, firstly, is that even legal to be able to do? I mean just because they say I owe them money shouldn't mean that they can put something damaging on my credit record, just because they are Verizon, correct? If it was sent to collections, would I be able to take them to court, and in the meantime not have my credit record damaged. I have an excellent credit rating thus far, and i'd hate for it to be ruined over something stupid such as this, over the negligence of my local HR person and Verizon's payroll department. Any advice on this situation is welcomed.
