I got my credit report the other day and discovered a delinquent account with Verizon Wireless had ruined my credit score. The interesting thing is, I've never even had an account with Verizon Wireless. The account in question was actually in my father's name. He had closed it two years ago at the end of his contract after a Verizon customer service rep told him that the balance would be wiped out because it had been billed in error. Oops. They must have forgotten to inform their collections department.
That balance now shows up on my credit report. Their incompetence nearly cost me a home loan. I called Verizon's customer "service" line repeatedly, only to be put on hold, transfered around, told they had no record of my account (no, really) and put on hold again. They still have not corrected the problem. I have resorted to writing angry letters and e-mails. I can't afford to waste my Cingular Wireless minutes on this faceless monopoly. Please, don't use Verizon Wireless. Their customer service record is only slightly better than that of the DMV.
