I take care of my 92-year old dad's finances, and was dismayed to see a $67.08 charge to NME on his online credit card account, especially after reading negative reports on the internet about this company.
I called NME and and told the representative that my dad is on the "do not call" registry, and the guy said that my dad had called them to follow up on a sweepstakes offer, and that my dad agreed to 4 years of magazine subscriptions. I told him my dad is 92, has memory loss and confusion, that he did not remember making the order (just the day before), that I had power of attorney and that we wanted to cancel the 4-year subscription.
The guy was very aggressive and resistant and acted unwilling to cancel the subscription entirely, and offered to make it for just one year. He wanted to keep me on the line with options and I said no, that I didn't want to waste time, that we wanted to cancel the entire subscription.
I got more upset with each minute talking to the representative, and I told him if they didn't cancel that I would report this to the Attorney General's office and do everything I can, and I asked to speak with his supervisor (he said he was the supervisor), and then to someone else in his office. He finally said he would cancel and gave me the cancellation number.
THis was a very uncomfortable interaction, my voice was raised and I was trembling before finishing, but I'm glad they finally agreed to cancel.
