My boyfriend and I went to the animal shelter to adopt a dog. We have recently bought a house and we were looking to add another member to our family and help a disadvantaged pet.
Fred Acker from the SPCA stated that he wanted to do a home inspection. We made the appointment for 7:00 PM. He never showed and never called us. At 9:45 PM, he finally called and informed us that the adoption was denied.
He denied the adoption for 3 reasons: Our yard is not fenced in, we had no prior vet reference, and he "didn't like the area".
We live in a residential section where 2 blocks over there is a main road. Our yard is of sufficient size for a mid-size dog to play in. There are many small and mid-sized dogs in our neighborhood that are walked daily. Many houses in this area do not have fences. So how is it that other families can possess pets in this area, but we are apparently not qualified to adopt a disadvantaged dog? How does a geographical area become the reason to deny ownership?
I tried to negotiate with Fred, but he was stubborn and wouldn't work with me on any of the issues regarding the adoption. He was willing to overlook the lack of having a vet reference, but stated that installing a fence or moving were my only other options. When I told him that he behaved unprofessionally for not showing up on time for the home inspection and not calling sooner, he gruffly replied "oh okay thanks" and then hung up on me.
How does the non-profit director of the SPCA get to be where he is by being disrepectful to people who truly care about helping animals? Why is Waterbury CT blacklisted from adopting a homeless dog? Is it wrong to own a dog if your yard isn't fenced? Is there a SPCA chapter in NYC? Are NYC residents not qualified to adopt a pet as well?
By the way, this man debited $295.00 from my checking account and I am still waiting for my refund. He states it will be mailed this week, but do I trust him?
