I was checking my bank account and saw a charge I had never made. The companie's name on my statement was shown as AP9*SHOPPINGESSENTIA-V 888-999-0564 CT. I asked my husband if he could help me determine why this charge was on my account. He typed AP9*SHOPPINGESSENTIA-V into Google and discovered a web site, http://usacomplaints.com/reports/0/288/RipOff0288481.htm, in which it warned that this was a scam. I then proceeded to contact someone at the phone number listed on my bank statement to find out why they were charging my credit card. The person who answered indentified himself as Demitris. I asked him why I was receiving these charges. He replied that because I had signed up for www.classmates.com that this action resulted in an automatic signup for AP9*SHOPPINGESSENTIA-V which he said I could have cancelled within seven days and that it was now too late to cancel. I explained that I had no idea that I had ever been signed up so how could I know to cancel within seven days. He then became rude and said I was stuck with it. I then proceeded to inform him that I had discovered that his company is listed on the rip off site and that I was going to contact an attorney and start legal action. He still hestated to agree until I said I was going to my bank and file charges there.
After that he finally agreed to return my money within the next 2 business days. I signed up for ClassMates.com on 3/5 for $5.00 per month for 3 months. The transaction from Shopping Essentials ocurred on 3/12. The conversation with Demitris took place on 3/13 after I discovered the charge on my credit card. If Demitris actually refunds my money, it should be posted by Monday 3/17, at the latest. This is still yet to be seen but I at least have a confirmation number that I can refer to if necessary. If I do get the refund I will still watch to see if I get charged again and will let you know if I do.
