I am going to try and keep this brief but if anyone needs more information I'll happilly give it.
My husband and I rented from RAC several times over the last couple of years, some items were returned when we no longer wanted them, some were paid off. Earlier this year we rented a Front load washer and a laptop computer. All payments were made to the company with no negative history at all, and the company was very polite and businesslike.
IN November, my husband became violent toward me and we seperated, he took the laptop and I kept the washer. I went down that week and asked them what I should do about the stuff and they told me to set up a seperate account with only my name on it for the washer, then keep paying for it as normal. Long story short, my washer is paid current (and ahead) but my estranged husband hasn't paid on the Laptop.
THe accunt the laptop is on is in BOTH our names, the contract we signed is in both out names, but I actually signed the contract. I have a restraining order against my estranged husband and we have no contact.
Rent A Center called me today and told me there were sending the laptop to "legal" and that they were going to prosecute ME because I'd signed the contract. Then they said that I should go down and fill out a police report saying the laptop was stolen. That doesn't sound right to me, since it wasn't STOLEN because one member of the account has (I assume) possession of it.
They are really pressing me to fill out a police report and threatening to have mee arrested. I can't afford ot pay for a laptop I don't have access too... Does anyone have any suggestions?
