Complaint / Review
Silk Enterprises - Jaguar
Magazine ripoff, Danville

I wanted to follow up on the complaints about Jaguar LLC.
I was ripped off regarding door to door magazine sales. Jaguar was involved as they were listed on the receipt. There are companies in Washington (state) and California involved too: namely Silk Enterprises operating out of Antioch and Danville.

If you enter magazine scam into a search engine, you will find descriptions which tell exactly how this operates. I talked to this girl for quite a while and what she said turned out to be just what the scam descriptions said.in short, you buy from her a group of magazines (like 6). The total price is not clearly stated nor is the term of the subscriptions. She
wanted a deposit of ~$120 preferably in cash (not check) and quickly and briefly mentioned at the end that I would be billed for ~$20/ month later (no term mentioned: i.E., for how many months). Also, she wanted a credit card number (I used Amex).

Actually, I didn't get exactly all the magazines I asked for, but that's only minor. I received a letter from Silk Enterprises stating that I owed them ~$40/month for about 3 years for those 6 magazines. The total price would have been ~$1500.00!!! They wanted to know if I wanted to change my payments to more money each for a shorter time and to give my permission to charge Amex $40/month. Before I could say no, they charged it the next day. I tried to stop Amex from paying it and they couldn't, although Amex refunded the first $40 to
me.

Phone calls to Silk to cancel didn't work; I was still being charged on Amex. The first call, she said I can't cancel. Then she said if I paid them another $80 I could get out of it. I didn't accept. They already had about $150 of mine. The Jaguar sales girl makes it a point to tell you that it is not cancellable. When I called Silk, they said that too. They had my voice tape recorded agreeing to the sale and were going to use it against me. THEY NEVER SAID UPFRONT WHAT THE TOTAL COST WAS GOING TO BE, not until I got that letter, and then they would not cancel.

I finally had to close the Amex account to stop them. Now they sent me numerous threatening letters talking about bill collection agancies. They even offered by telephone call to "let me" pay them four payments of ~$300 each to save a little. They called me almost
daily and left messages on my answering machine telling me to call them to discuss this. I left them messages on their voicemail saying I was cancelling; that did no good. They called me, by their own admission about 53 times.

Finally after several months they stopped; I just ignored their threats. I filed complaints with the FTC and the California attorney general with no result. I believe that they may be in the process of changing their name from Silk to something new: I found another magazine company (I forgot the name) that had the same customer service address as Silk. Their website was under development for the second company. I got the impression that this would be their new name once the authorties finally put the heat on Silk Enterprises.

Don't buy magazines door-to-door ever, no matter how nice the young person seems.
