Miller Motte Technical College
Consumer Report

Miller-Motte technical college told me before I went to school there that my credits would transfer to a much larger local university that I had planned on attending. When I was one class away from graduation I found out this wasn't true and stopped attending class.

Proceed this by the knowledge that the school doesn't have you fill out your fafsa or loan information yourself - they filled everything out for me every time. I had asked if they could get me enough loans to try and pay rent and at one point buy a car I could use to get to classes, and they agreed to this - they cut me a couple of checks on this method (which I did use to get a car, which is another story). However, later that year, they told me there was 'something wrong' with my financial aid. (This was the beginning of the semester I was in the last time I went to school.) I asked them what happened and they told me they could get it straightened out and not to worry about it.

When I found out that I couldn't get my credits to transfer, I dropped out about a week before classes ended. My attendance was already bad enough that I knew I could just not go one more time and they'd drop me, so I did. I was so upset about not being able to transfer almost TWO YEARS of credits that I didn't want to even BE there any more.

I made an arrangement with my loan company to give me time to get into classes elsewhere (so I could go to that local university) and just transfer my loans there so I could put off paying them til I graduated from my new, real university.

When I went to pick up my transcript from MMTC (there's a law in Tennessee that says you HAVE to provide a transcript from your previous school regardless of how your association ended or you can't continue schooling) they told me they wouldn't release it until I paid my outstanding balance of TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Nevermind the amount I'd had to take out in loans to pay the school. They also got me for ten thousand dollars, and it was outstanding NOT to the loan company who I agreed to owe money to, but the school itself.

A single semester at MMTC does not cost ten thousand dollars. Come to find out when they messed up my financial aid they had gotten 'too much money' from the loan company and instead of NOT sending me a check, they sent me a check, opened an outstanding balance on me, and sent the rest BACK to the loan company.

And when they were trying to 'fix' it, they were trying to get ADDITIONAL loans on me to straighten it out. Now I dropped out of class LITERALLY the week before classes ended. They tell me now that they 'couldn't' get the amount they were supposed to get from the loan company because I wasn't in class long enough. I asked BEFORE I dropped out if everything was fine. They said it was JUST fine. And now, not only can I not continue my education with a university (my degree is worthless without doing so) I have some crazy number like thirty thousand dollars of useless debt, all told!

I don't know what to do! This CAN'T be legal. How can a university tell us we can transfer credits when we can't? I specifically asked if I'd be able to take my credits to THAT university. I asked over and over until I got a definitive 'yes' and I wouldn't have gone to MMTC otherwise. It was ALWAYS the plan to go to the state university.

MMTC is a predator school and I'm just another one of the powerless people who've been hurt by them.
