Consumer Report

I've had some problems with Internet Explorer displaying some pages on Windows 7 (including msn.com) and today I decided to track down a number for Microsoft in an attempt to fix the problem or get rid of Explorer.

Instead of finding Microsoft, I accidentally called iTechLine. After discussing the problem with the tech (who was a little hard to understand due to a heavy accent) I agreed to let them look at my computer using logmein123.com. The tech ran some sort of scan, and then proceeded to tell me that he was shocked my computer still worked. I had 33,000 corrupted files and trojan horse files that had allowed hackers to have all my information including bank numbers and credit cards, etc. Mind you, I don't do any banking on this computer so I'm not sure if this was all simply part of a scare script or if the tech was quick to point out worst-case scenarios.

He wanted to fix the problems for me for $199 and change; and I thought he said he'd do the entire network for that price, or perhaps I just misheard. I told him that the price was fine but that I wanted to check out some facts about his company online first. Considering what I'm reading about them here, I'm suprised he was as friendly about letting me go as he was. He gave me his name and number on a notepad file and asked that I call back when I wanted his help, and not to wait long considering the mountain of problems my computer has.

I admit that I have no idea if he's legit or not, but it sounded wrong and now I'm reading complaints that confirm what I feared. I'm only curious if I might have problems on my computer that I allowed him to install, or if I simply slipped the net their main objective. I just installed AVG Internet Security 2013 last weekend and plan to run it first thing in the morning if nothing inhibits me from doing so.

After that I'll continue to look for help with my Internet Explorer issue, and also see if I can find another avenue to see if I've invited new trouble with my last attempt.

Once again, I will state that I have no confirmation on my own that this was a scam; but I would be wary and do research about them before entrusting my computer to them.
