I received an SMS from my cell phone provider that excessive data was used overnight on my phone. Having looked at the application that caused this, 125 MB was used by WhatsApp overnight. Interesting, as I was sleeping and merely exchanged a few messages before I went to bed! My service provider said that often WhatsApp runs automatic updates overnight. Well, this must be 10 years' worth of updates that were run. This is just about my ENTIRE month's data used up in one night! Besides, I have programmed my phone so that automatic uploads can only occur when I am connected to Wi-Fi!
Try getting hold of these guys. There is no contact number, just an email address. So I complained via email, and all one gets back is an automated reply, which has nothing to do with my query. In a nutshell, one can't get hold of a human being in the company, and there is no way of communicating with them for an investigation and a refund! Needless to say, I have since removed the app from my phone! A warning to other users! They are not a "free" service. They rip you off in other ways!
