Consumer Report

Brian approached in a parking lot and offered to fix chipping paint on the bumper of my car. He was driving what I believe was a Dodge Journey with his family inside when he stopped and asked if I was thinking about getting the car repaired and that he worked for a shop but wanted to get hsi own business going. He claimed that he could repair the damage for half the price of a shop since he was working on the side for cash. He also stated that he was also using the tools from where he worked since he was trying to start his business and did not have enough money yet for the tools. He used a lot of paint repair terms and explained the bonding, sanding, painting and clear coat process. I was skeptical but we exchanged phone numbers and I saw his license plate and thought I would give him a chance. I returned in the middle of the job and he said he had gone out to get paint. I could see the sanding and bonding that had been done and though not perfect it looked like it was coming along. I left again for a while and came back to a bumper full of wax which Brian claimed was protecting the clear coat finish. I became concerned but he carefully removed some wax to shw the paint underneath. It looked like it was the right color but I was not entirely convinced. I didn't want to break my end of the deal so I learily gave him $300 after he asked that I call with any problems if it did not look 100% original. The next day I removed the wax to discover a horribly mismatched paint job with overspray and a bumpy finish with no clear coat. I immediately called Brian who surprisingly answered and sounded concerned while reassuring me that he could resolve the problem the next day. He asked me to meet again to take a look and thought the car just needed a little more clear coat. He offered to return my money if I was not convinced when we met. With a paint job that looks like a $3 can of spray paint he cannot possibly have the skill to fix this and knowing he may have to return money he will not show up as he stated. I read about scams similar to this but this guy was more openly communicating and is answered his phone while trying to sound sympathetic to my concerns. Its quite advanced over the other stories I have read regarding bumper repair but the similarity beingthe wax to fool the customer into not seeing the paint job for 24 hours.
