Questionable charge on bill reported charges to collections agency before bill was even received by us

Am filing report on behalf of my son, a college student. He was in charge of the Comcast bill for himself roommates. A year ago he moved home for the summer. Roommates weren't moving until next day. They didn't return their cable boxes and modem, but claimed they did. The landlord also said no equipment was found when the house was cleaned after everyone moved out. Our son therefore ended up being the responsible party to pay for the lost equipment. He has been paying for their mistake ever since. We were told by the local Comcast store near campus that he owed $580. He has been paying (with our help) $100 a month. The last payment was made in April. Although it was a big waste of money, we were glad when we thought the bill was paid in full.

About 2 weeks ago, my husband & I received a bill from Comcast that says he still owes $506.95 (plus the $580 already paid) for a total of $1086.95. We were shocked, so I called Comcast billing dept. And they put me in touch with a supervisor who promised to call back in a week, but never did. I called again and was turned over to another supervisor. She said the remaining charges were for a modem and (this I don't understand) $216.95, which is a "last amount." This is confusing because we hadn't received any bills for a year.

But that's not all. The new charges were billed on April 4, and the supervisor told me that they had been turned over to a collection agency on the same day, April 4th. We don't understand how new charges can be added to an account when that account had been closed for nearly a year. And it's unreal that the new charges can be sent to collections before the customer has even received the bill. The whole family was working to pay this off so it wouldn't ruin our son's
credit score, and now this happens. We paid the $506.95 so the balance is now 0. But we feel blindsided and ripped off.

We know our son has to pay for the lost equipment. But we don't understand the charge of $216.95 which is listed as "write-off" on the bill we recently received. Also, we are concerned by the fact that this amount was turned over to collections before we ever got the bill. We had always been told that the total owed was $580, which we had paid in full as of last month. The extra $506.95 has now been paid, and we want Comcast to notify the collection agency so our son's credit rating is fine again.
