Shipment returned but being charged for product

I received a statement dated July 5 from Proactiv for $45.90 for product they shipped to me. I was surprised as I had previously cancelled my account by phone call and when this product was sent to me I wrote "refused" in big red letters and gve the box - unopened - to the post office to return. During the years I was with Proactiv when I had too much product shipped I always returned it in the same manner as above and received credit with no problem. When I called on July 20 I was told they had no record of me cancelling my account and no record of the product being returned. They asked how I had returned it and when I told them they said I need "proof of mailing" to get a credit. Well you don't get that when you just write "refused" and return. I have talked to a supervisor on a couple of different occasions but they will not budge and now have sent me to collections! I do not feel I owe this amount.
