Classmates.com automatically renewed my membership without my knowledge. Their promotional rate for a Gold membership was $9.99. However, in December they charged my Visa $39.00 for the renewal without any notice.
I emailed them and called their customer service representative to ask for a refund and was given the standard company response—blah, blah, blah— that the account default setting is for "automatic" renewal.
I never was given any kind of written membership confirmation or courtesy reminder of the renewal.in fact, the site appears to have little traffic and seems to produce a lot of spam: "So-and-so is looking for you..."
The blogosphere is filled with many consumer complaints about Classmates.com and news of class action lawsuits. Please spread the word to help stop this scam.
