I was checking my banking account online and discovered an unauthorized charge of $19.95 from PMI Identity. I had been on the internet using a company called Intellis to find a family member with an unpublished number. Apparently, I was automatically signed up for a 7-day trial membership. I think there's a box in very fine, small print that is automatically checked as soon as you pay your $4.95 for their "find a person" service.
When I called, the rep asked me for my membership#. I told her I wasn't a member and demanded unauthorized membership canceled. The fact that they have access to my checking account & my personal info is scary. I told them I was going to call the attorney general's office/and or BBB.
They were very cool and polite (even the supervisor), which indicates to me that they are well-scripted and very use to getting these calls. It will take 2-3 to credit back my account, and 2 months to delete my info from there system. I'm also waiting for a cancellation letter.
Be wary of this and similar companies. A personal identity company stealing your identity is quite ironic.
