I've tried to close my account with these idiots for a month now. Called their Listener Care department, as specified in the user agreement, waited on hold, and was told to call a different number. Waited on hold on that number for a long time and finally gave up. Tried to email them to cancel — get a canned reply back that they can't cancel from an email request because they can't verify my identity, even though I sent the email from their secure web site after logging in. Sent their invoice back with a cancellation request and have not heard anything, but the account still shows a balance due.
Anyone who has a problem with XM's cancellation policy (as many here have) should also file a complaint with the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection (I did):

They don't investigate individual complaints, but if enough people complain, they work with the DOJ and state attorneys general to investigate and litigate cases.
