Complaint / review text:
I was enrolled in Kaplan University and attending classes. I was in my third term when I became ill and was hospitalized. I was unable to login to my account due to being sick so my husband who was also taking classes contacted his academic advisor who agreed to pass on the information.
When I was released from the hospital, I tried to login to my account and was told the account was no longer active. I contacted the school and was told that because of their policy my account was put in drop status. I did not drop out of school. Now my student loans are trying to collect their money which I do not have. They told me that there was nothing they could do about it, except maybe file a complaint with the dean. When I tried to do this they wanted the form downloaded and printed then sent back to them. I do not have a working printer so this solution does not work for me.
Their collections now calls two or three times a day wanting 2080 dollars and then I will be allowed to re-enroll. They suggested taking out private loans which I do not have good enough credit for and there is nobody close to me who could co-sign either. Their automated message repeats itself on my answering machine and borders on harassment. We have told them several times what happened and always get the same response. "I'm sorry but there is nothing we can do about that." I feel like I am being discriminated against because I got sick and it isn't fair.
Because of the drop status they put on me, the student loans are in default. When I have tried to sign up to attend a different college so I can finish my degree, they will not even call me back. Therefore, I am stuck in a low paying job with a lot of debt and very few options.in a way, I now wish I never responded to the email I got about Kaplan University.
