I signed a contract to have furniture in Michigan moved to Florida. When the contract with East Movers was signed, it was after the sales person, Harry James and I, went over the inventory list at least 4 different times on 4 different dates. Harry James assured me that the FLAT rate (3335.52) that he quoted me would be the only price I would have to pay as long as I stayed within my list. We repeatedly went over the inventory list so that I was positive that we had everything that I wanted them to move.
When the 2 gentlemen arrived at my house on move day, the first thing the guy wanted to do was look through the house and verify what he was moving. While he looked through the house, I pointed out additional items that I may needed him to move if we had room and if the price was right. Once this inspection was completed, he indicated that the items on my list that I wanted moved, were over the weight limit. He estimated that it would be approximately $2,000.00 more dollars to get my inventory list of items moved.
None of the items that were in addition to the original inventory list were included on this additional price he was quoting me At that time, I indicated that the contract price was sold as a FLAT rate price for the items on the inventory list. The driver then said that the quote was just an estimate and he was there to get give a more concrete estimate, that it would still depend on how much it weighed once he got it to the weigh station to get the exact weight.
The driver called his manager and the manager explained the same thing to me as the driver had explained. I asked to speak with Harry James and was told that Harry was supposedly on an extended vacation or whatever. I tried to convince both the driver and the manager, that it clearly states on the contract, on the page after the inventory list, that WE GIVE YOU A FLAT RATE BASED ON YOUR ITEM LIST.
This section is what Harry James kept telling me was their policy. Harry James also sold me the contract indicating that he was not a broker and that he worked for the moving company. Later to find out that this was not true. Maybe Harry James was a broker. More false information. After much discussion with the driver and his manager, I did tell them to leave because they were not fulfilling their part of the contract.
They put me in a very bad position. I almost had no other choice than to agree to pay the additional costs
of approximately $2000.00 when everything else is already scheduled for the move. I tried to secure another mover for the next day and as you may know it was not easy to get this lined up on such a short notice.
They did put me in a bind, so I called them and told them I still needed their services. The manager told me that they would be back around 4:00 the next day as they had went to Ohio to do another move.in the mean time, I secured another company to do the move, so I then called the manager of East Movers back and told them not to come. This call was placed at approximately 10:00 AM.
Also, another note to be documented. The truck that the movers showed up in would never have fit our items on the inventory list and the driver indicated it might be necessary to call another truck to help with the move. This is all very unprofessional and not acceptable when you hire a company to move your household items from Michigan to Florida. I had no confidence in them.
I have also filed a claim with the Better Business Bureau indicating that I would not ever recommend anyone to use this company. You may check with BBB for the information I gave them.
