Repair to our hot water tank involved replacing the flame guard gas valve. Since it was under warranty with Whirlpool I expected them to reimburse us for this part & the labor. Whirlpool informed me that the part was only a $40 part from them or $60 from Lowe's and that I should discuss the charge with our plumber. Mr. Gareleck charged us $203.90 for that same part plus $77.50 labor. Whirlpool did send us a check for $150.00 which is all they would pay. When I talked with Chuck Gareleck the owner he would not justify his charge for the part, just told me that's his price for having it in stock. He suggested that I should have called the contractor who installed my water tank and had him repair it. This certainly sounds like price gouging to me and I intend to check it out further with the N.Y. State Attorney General's Office.
