Extended warranty is just a high profit item for Sears

My mother bought a top end dishwasher, one of those Bosch dishwashers with the drawers. Given the fact that the house was built in 1930s, it was the only kind that would fit the space. Seeing that she and my Dad are senior citizens and not at all mechanically inclined (think Mr. Magoo), they bought the extended warranty.

Now if you've been to buy appliances, they hard sell this puppy like it was the greatest thing since the internet. But it represents some 25%-35% of the price so it's always an expensive item. I always turn it down. Then they call you afterward to try to get you to buy it later "for your benefit". After hearing my mom's story, I know exactly who gets the benefit.

With this "warranty" you are supposed to get your dishwasher check up once a year. Well, my mom called for hers. ONE day late. That was the kiss of death. NOTHING could be done. She could not get her included checkup.

There apparently was NO WAY around this horrible deadline. Last time I checked, genuine human beings were the ones checking out dishwashers, not expired database listings. She went up the chain of command and the final result? We're so sorry, we can't give you your dishwasher check up.

So answer this. How many warranty holders are late or never call at all? Probably fewer than 25% would be my guess. This is to Sears benefit. They don't have to pay a servicemand and therefore it becomes an enormous high profit item.

So when they offer you the extended warranty, threaten to go buy elsewhere. Right now they should be doing cartwheels to satisfy a customer. Not the case here. My mom was merely trying to get what she paid for but one day late was too much. I won't be buying my appliances there any more and neither will she.
