Beware beware beware. Are you shopping for a home warranty for a piece of mind? If you're looking at HMS, I suggest you look elsewhere. It might get fixed, but plan on being without for quite a while.

It all started back in the winter when my heat pump stopped working every time it got really cold... Or when it had to work hard. I called HMS and they sent out one of their contractors to look at it. After having them out twice to look at the problem, they never found anything wrong despite my claims of a problem. Personnly I don't think they looked that hard. After missing work on a couple times, I finally gave up used EM heat this winter which I'm sure was a lot more expensive. Out $100 for my deductible.

Now jump to the summer, same problem and another $100 deductible. Every time it gets really hot the system shuts down when it works really hard. I called them on June 29 and since they couldn't come out that week, I had to wait until July 15th due to my conflicts. Finally, someone came out to the house on Saturday the 15th. They showed up on a Saturday and couldn't find anything once again. But said call back if it shuts down. Luckily it happened that day and I called back and they came back that night. After not being able to figure it out, they came back Monday night. They FINALLY figured out there was a bad control board. I asked how long it would be before someone was back out to fix it. They said someone should be back by the end of the week.

After not hearing anything by Thurday, I called the subcontractor for a status update. Got no response. Called back on Friday and was told that HMS had to supply the part because the subcontractor part price was too expensive. So I called HMS.

HMS told me that either the subcontractor had just filed the report or it was lost and just entered on Friday. Either way, this doesn't reflect well for HMS as either they sat on the report for a few days or they don't hold their subcontractors accountable for submitting timely reports.

At that point, HMS said it would be another 24 to 48 hours before the report was finalized and the part was ordered. Move ahead to Sunday (July 23). Called HMS back for a status update and apparently purchasing doesn't work on the weekend which was not part of the conversation. So now we're looking at 72 to 96 hours. Who knows when the part will actually make it to the subcontractor and it will be installed.

Throughout this all, I'm fortunate that my AC works most of the time as there's been a heat wave the past week. If it was completely broken, I would've probably spent the money and had it fixed myself.

To me, HMS - Homesure of Virginia is a company that doesn't care about their clients. I'm waiting around because HMS is trying to probably save $100 off a $250 (the price HMS told me) control board.

So the bottom line is this. If you're heating and air conditioning systems are old and you're worried about spending thousands to replace, a HMS warranty might be for you. Just be prepared to do without for weeks while you're waiting and pray there's not a heat wave or deep freeze. And be prepared to keep on top of them every step of the way.
