Having seen an unknown phone number appearing on our Caller ID for more than two weeks (several times an HOUR the last few days), I finally became curious enough to sit down and determine just who would dare call us so often that we had to turn off the ringers on our phones.
Astonishingly, I discovered that this was a phone number from Capital One Auto Collections. Aware that we are current on our payments (and have ALWAYS been current on our payments with CapOne, and with every other creditor we have ever had), we had no idea why they would dare have their collections department call so often we had to turn off the phones. We had thought the whole time that the phantom "unavailable" number on our Caller ID was just a misguided telemarketer.
The customer service representative informed us that our payment was not made, that we were several weeks late, and has REFUSED to rectify the problem, though we have readily available the proof that payment was promptly remitted and that Capital One DID INDEED RECEIVE IT! We have a copy of our Bank of America electronic payment, showing that our payment was remitted on May 1s as well as a confirmation number that shows that Capital One DID receive the payment. We have contacted Bank of America about this problem, and they have assured us that payment was made, Capital One CONFIRMED RECEIPT, and finally that they will intervene on our behalf.
You're probably wondering why I'm so upset over something so seemingly small. Well, given the litany of other nearly identical complaints, this obviously isn't an accident. I shouldn't have to spend hours working it out. I should be able to call once with the confirmation number from my bank draft or the rest of my stack of proof that payment was remitted, and they should investigate immediately, refund any bogus late fees assessed, and quit calling us every 10 minutes since this was obviously THEIR fault! Why should I have to call a dozen times and spend hours on hold for their mistake?
To everyone who insists that this only happens to idiots who don't understand how credit cards, etc. Work, let this serve as a warning. You'll only promulgate that garbage until it happens to you. I pay with bank drafts for a reason. The fact that when I call and try to explain the mistake they say they don't care that I've already paid and couldn't care less that I can prove 5 different ways that they received payment and that they've made a mistake is VERY telling.
