Worthless coupon. Dealership chooses to keep $200 instead of good reputation

While searching the internet for a used car, I came upon one that I liked a lot. I was seeking further info, when I found a coupon offered by the dealership that had my car.

I followed the instructions and printed out the coupon. It was for $200 off the price of my next purchase of a new or used vehicle. The date it was printed was right on the coupon. It was 05/08/05.

On 05/13/05 I took the long drive to see my car. Prior to sealing any kind of deal, I mentioned the coupon and the fact that I had forgotten it at home to the salesperson who was helping me, Suzie.

She went in the back for a few minutes, then came out and informed me that her boss said that the coupon was for a referral. I had no recollection of there being anything about a referral on the coupon, but took her word for it and went ahead with the deal.

I didn't give the coupon another thought until a couple of days later when I was going through some papers and accidently ran across it. I looked it over and there was no sign of the word referral anywhere. I think this was on 05/17.

I gave them a call and spoke to Suzie. After telling her of my discovery, the first thing she said was that I was supposed to present it prior to, or at the time of the sale.

I reminded her that she told me of the referral thing, and had I not been wrongly informed, for $200 I would have gone home and retrieved the coupon before making the purchase. She said she understood and would see what she could do.

From that point on we've, (I) have gotten nowhere. This person has to talk to that person; so 'n so is not in today. The Internet Sales Director was the person to present the coupon to, and she didn't even know it existed!

I've called them each day, Tues. Thru Fri. Took the weekend off and called again today, Monday 05/23. I could not believe what I was hearing. Suzie said she had talked to the owner himself and he took her over to a computer and brought up the coupon. He explained to her that what this meant was that the $200 was already taken off in the sale price. Need I say more?

Suzie said if I wanted to talk to him, I could call back Friday because he was in Chicago for a meeting until then.

One more point which may be irrelevent is, they really shafted me on the trade-in value for my truck. I knew it and agreed to it because I wanted the car. One dealership quoted me $4000 for my truck, another, $3750. The day before I traded it, I was offered $4500 cash from a private party.

Moore Chrysler gave me $2000 for my '96 F150, which was a nice truck. After that it really shocks me that a supposedly reputable dealership would squabble over $200 like these people are.
