Is a ripoff bully on brakes

I brought our 2000 Chrysler Minivan into Ray's Automotive on Feb. 12 complaining of an intermittent brake light warning problem and requesting an oil change.

On Feb. 18, Tom, a Rays technician, called to inform my wife that the front break pads were worn, the brake pistons needed cleaning and the calipers needed replacing. She was informed the bill would be around $500.00.

I thought that seemed like a lot of work so I called the shop 10 minutes later and expressed reservations about it. Since the car was less than two years old, I did not see it necessary to replace the calipers and requested that they simply replace the break pads. From that point on, Tom got very defensive and openly hostile to me. He said "That's not the way we do things here, you don't want your family riding on questionable brake work." I repeated that I questioned the need for caliper replacement. Tom hung up on me.

I then called back and spoke with the owner, Ray, and had about the identical conversation. I repeated I just wanted the pads replaced. Ray said he could not do just that. I then requested that all service be terminated.

Now all would be fine if the story ended there. We could sum it up as a difference of opinion on the brake service.

The morning of Feb. 20 I went to the shop to pick up the car and was greeted by Tom, who furnished the invoice, and went ballistic. He called me an 'asshole', said "F#* YOU" directly to my face, and I was concerned he might take a slug at me.

I politely began to ask a question about the bill and I simply got the reply of "F#*^*& YOU" again. At no point did I ever raise my voice or do anything to initiate this response.

Now at this point I was just anxious to get "out of there" as Tom was visibly angry and shouting profanity repeatedly. I signed the credit card receipt, got in my car, and left.

I am requesting a refund for all but the oil change portion of the bill and an apology from the company. Perhaps in the future, this company can 'agree to disagree' with it's customers rather than waging war with them.

Beware!
