My husband and I have dined five times at the Popeye's Chicken at 5988 N Rivers Avenue, and on three of those visits our debit card was charged too much.
On the first occasion my husband picked up dinner at the drive-thru. Later I spotted something off in our checking account and looked at it online: Popeye's had taken the payment out two times. We figured it was an honest error and filed a dispute with our bank.
A couple of weeks later, we ate lunch there again. The card was swiped and handed back to my husband, and then the staff asked for it a second time. He refused, pointing out that they had already double charged us once. They claimed a second charge would not happen, and the manager was very rude, acting as if it were trivial that we would have to spend our time disputing a charge with the bank once more. We were double charged again anyway!
The most recent visit was on Friday, October 11th. Rain was falling, and we chose the restaurant because it was nearby. Our bill came to $10.47, and yes, we paid with the debit card.
Today I found out that besides the $10.47, the card had also been swiped for $104.54!!! Now I have to work on getting that money back too.
I am filing this report mainly because I fear they are kiting money. Either an individual is keeping the cash, or the restaurant is holding it in its own account to cover bills until the refund is forced.
Three problems in five visits, plus the manager's cold and odd attitude, have left us very suspicious. Think of the customers who never review their statements, or who pay by credit card and ignore those statements. If we were hit three times out of five, how many others are affected?
I have reached out to the corporate office and have had no reply.
