I too was contacted by CAMCO about a year ago. After a few calls where I tried to talk to them and explain the facts, I wrote a letter. I explained that this was not a valid debt and asked for validation of the debt.
I have never recieved a response from this letter, though they continued to call. After hanging up on them as soon as they identified who they were each time they called, the calls stopped after a month.
Now I recieve a letter from Riddle & Associates and the phone calls have started. But they don't bother with real people, they use an automated calling service. I will waste One letter on them also, but don't expect it to do any good.
What I find most interesting is that from what I read when I was researching CAMCO a year ago, passing this along to Riddle & Associates is illegal. Once you contact them and request validation of the debt they must stop all action until they respond to your request.
Passing this along to another collection agent is a clear violation of the law. What is the state of IL doing?
As to the threat of reporting this to the credit rating companies, I wrote the three major agencies and said that CAMCO had threatened this action. Two responded with letters saying they had not been contacted by CAMCO and the third sent a copy of my credit report, showing no action by CAMCO.
Now I will see how long before they quit calling. But I am going to put together a letter with documentaion and send to the AG's of MI, IL and UT. I seen references to law suits but no specifics. Any specific information on these would be appreciated.
